Schoolteacher Nancy (Kidman) becomes convinced her husband (Matthew Macfadyen) is hiding something. With a colleague from the school (Gael García Bernal), she starts shadowing him and prying into the secrets behind her seemingly flawless marriage. The deeper the two dig, the less certain it gets who is the victim here and who is only playing one. Suspicion builds slowly, with neighborly politeness, and that scrubbed-clean decency is exactly what unsettles you.

This is a contained psychological thriller where the dread comes from the surface of a perfect life rather than any violence. Kidman carries long stretches in close-up, and the final turn flips the whole picture-book town on its head. Good pick for fans of slow-burn suburban-gothic suspense.
