When the emperor orders one soldier from every household, the Hua family has no son, so the duty falls to an ailing old man. Over twelve years on the frontier against the nomadic Rouran, she climbs from foot soldier to commander, guarding her secret and burying friends along the way. Beside her is Wentai (Chen Kun), the one comrade who knows the truth — and a bond that's deadlier in an army camp than any blade.

Zhao Wei carries the film through cost rather than spectacle: exhaustion, guilt, the slow wearing-down of war. Less fantasy than the cartoon, more mud and hard choices.
