Synopsis
Clouds of Sils Maria (2014) is Olivier Assayas' drama about an actress facing her own reflection in time, and you can watch online on iFILM. Celebrated star Maria Enders agrees to return to the play that made her name twenty years ago — but this time she's cast not as the young seductress, but as the older woman that girl destroys.
Juliette Binoche plays Maria; Kristen Stewart is her assistant Valentine. Much of the film is just the two of them in a remote Swiss mountain house, running lines that quietly slide into arguments about age, fame, honesty and who is really using whom. Chloë Grace Moretz turns up as a rising Hollywood name caught in tabloid scandal.
The film screened in competition at Cannes, and Stewart became the first American actress to win France's César for her performance here. Assayas made something smart and nearly plotless about how the profession devours the people who serve it. Slow cinema for anyone who prefers a strong two-hander and subtext over incident.
