Synopsis
The Teachers' Lounge (Das Lehrerzimmer, 2023) is İlker Çatak's German drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A string of thefts has rattled a middle school. Idealistic teacher Carla Nowak decides to find the culprit herself, and one quiet decision sets off a chain reaction nobody can stop.
Carla leaves a camera running in the staff room and catches a suspect on it. But the accusation lands on a colleague whose son sits in Carla's own class, and the school splinters — parents, staff, students and administration all pulling in opposite directions. Leonie Benesch carries the whole film; her character keeps doing the principled thing and keeps losing ground for it. The camera rarely lets Carla out of frame, and a jittery string score turns an ordinary school into a claustrophobic trap.
The film was Germany's submission to the Academy Awards and made the final five for Best International Feature. It's a chamber thriller about trust, fairness and how fast good intentions curdle into a witch hunt. Smart, tense and short on easy answers. Stream The Teachers' Lounge (2023) online on iFILM.
