Synopsis
Directed by Roy Boulting, Twisted Nerve (1968) is a British psychological thriller you can watch online on iFILM. The film caused genuine controversy on release — critics took issue with its framing of violent instability as hereditary, and the British Down's Syndrome Association issued a formal protest.
Martin Durnley (Hywel Bennett) lives under compounding pressure: a mother who infantilizes him, a stepfather who openly resents him, a brother kept in an institution. His coping mechanism is to slip into Georgie — a six-year-old child persona he inhabits with unsettling completeness. After a shoplifting incident, he meets Rachel (Hayley Mills), who feels sorry for him. She does not know what she is getting into.
Bernard Herrmann composed the film's signature whistled theme — the same one Quentin Tarantino used in Kill Bill thirty-five years later. Watch Twisted Nerve (1968) online on iFILM.
