Synopsis
3096 Days (3096 Tage, 2013) is Sherry Hormann's German drama, now available to watch online on iFILM. It retraces what happened to Austrian schoolgirl Natascha Kampusch, who vanished on her walk to school at ten years old.
An outwardly ordinary technician, Wolfgang Priklopil, shuts her inside a cellar beneath his house. Eight years and more pass there, the 3096 days of the title, spent between hunger, fear, and the captor's rare flashes of humanity. Antonia Campbell-Hughes carries the growing-up-in-captivity almost without dialogue, the camera fixed on a wasted body and eyes where the will to survive dims and flares again. The script draws on Kampusch's own account, written after she got out.
Hormann keeps the framing restrained, refusing to exploit the horror for shock, so the final dash to freedom hits harder than any thriller. It's a hard watch but an honest one, about holding on to yourself where that seems impossible. Stream 3096 Days (2013) online on iFILM.
