Redline

Redline (2009) is Takeshi Koike's feature-length anime, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Once every five years the whole galaxy stops for Red Line, an outlaw race with no rules at all, where the cars carry weapons and the finish line sits on a hostile planet that would rather blow the racers out of the sky.

At the center is JP, a reckless driver with a towering pompadour and an old-school machine that has no armor and no shields. He is in love with rival racer Sonoshee and throws himself into the event anyway, ignoring the local mafia, the military and his own odds of surviving. Takuya Kimura and Yu Aoi voice the leads. The plot is deliberately thin; the point is pure motion.

Studio Madhouse spent roughly seven years drawing this almost entirely by hand, around a hundred thousand frames with barely any digital shortcuts. The result is a dense, neon, ear-splitting ride that feels closer to a rock concert than to ordinary animation. Perfect if you want raw adrenaline and no time wasted on melodrama.
