Synopsis
May (2003) is Lucky McKee's indie horror drama, available to watch online on iFILM. It follows a painfully isolated young woman whose only childhood companion was a doll kept behind glass. Angela Bettis carries the whole thing in the title role.
May has a lazy eye, no social grace, and a desperate need to belong to someone. She works at a veterinary clinic, falls for a boy with beautiful hands (Jeremy Sisto), drifts toward a brash coworker (Anna Faris) — and every reach for closeness ends in rejection. Bettis plays her with no self-pity, balancing childlike sweetness against something quietly wrong. As one person after another lets her down, a simple and terrible logic takes hold: if you can't find a perfect friend, you can build one. Piece by piece.
McKee pulls off something rare — a horror film that breaks your heart first and frightens you second. It earned a cult following for exactly that pivot, sliding from coming-of-age ache into body horror. Skip it if you want comfort or a tidy ending. Stream May (2003) online on iFILM.
