Synopsis
Rental Family (2025) is a tragicomedy from director Hikari that you can watch online on iFILM. Brendan Fraser plays an American stuck in Tokyo who earns his living pretending to be other people's loved ones.
Phillip has spent seven years auditioning in Japan, and his biggest credit is still a toothpaste commercial. Broke, he signs on with an odd agency that rents out stand-in relatives and friends to people who feel alone. One day he's a groom at a stranger's wedding, the next a reporter interviewing an aging actor, then a father to a grade-school girl. He plays the parts mechanically at first. Soon he can't tell where the assignment ends and real affection begins.
Hikari builds the film around Japan's genuine rent-a-family industry and turns it into a question about loneliness and whether warmth can be bought. Fraser is soft and fumbling here, a long way from the action roles he's known for. A quiet movie for anyone who likes their funny and their sad walking side by side.
