Hard Truths

Hard Truths (2024) is a British drama from director Mike Leigh that you can watch online on iFILM. Marianne Jean-Baptiste plays Pansy, a woman so primed for conflict that every exchange — with her quietly defeated husband, her withdrawn adult son, a stranger who looked at her the wrong way in a car park — turns into a confrontation. She is exhausting to be around. The film does not look away.

Leigh built the characters through his signature extended rehearsal and improvisation process, the same approach behind Secrets & Lies and All or Nothing. Pansy's younger sister Chantelle (Michelle Austin) has carved out a warmer life: two daughters, a busy hairdressing salon, people who leave feeling better than when they arrived. The contrast between the two sisters is the film's engine. Leigh never explains Pansy; he just lets the camera stay close until fear and old damage start to show through the anger.
