About

Synopsis

Society (1989) is Brian Yuzna's cult body-horror, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Bill Whitney has the perfect Beverly Hills life — pool, popularity, a pretty sister, doting parents — and a nagging dread that he doesn't actually belong in his own family.

His therapist hears him out; his friends think he's paranoid. Then a secret recording from a family gathering reaches Bill, and the voices on it sound far too intimate, far too wrong. The deeper he digs, the clearer it gets that the rich families running his world share a secret his adoptive parents have kept from him. For most of its runtime the movie plays as sharp class satire about the haves feeding off the have-nots. Then the last reel arrives.

Special-effects artist Screaming Mad George built the climax, and his notorious "shunt" — an oozing, flesh-melding orgy of the wealthy — remains a touchstone for 80s practical gore fans. The film takes "the rich eat the poor" completely literally. If Re-Animator is your idea of a good night, this delivers; everyone else should skip dinner first.
