When his family flies off to Japan for the holidays, ten-year-old Max gets lost in the shuffle and left behind. An empty house feels like paradise at first: junk food, the TV, nobody telling him what to do. That same night Jeff and Pam (Rob Delaney and Aisling Bea), a stressed married couple convinced the Mercers have an heirloom that belongs to them, start circling the place. Max digs in to defend his home, rigging the rooms into an obstacle course of traps, paint cans, and whatever else he can grab.

This is the sixth film in the franchise, and rather than top the 1990 original it tweaks the formula — this time the would-be burglars are almost sympathetic.
