TV weatherman Phil Connors is sent to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to cover the annual groundhog ceremony. He never leaves. Each morning he wakes to the same Sonny & Cher song on the clock radio, the same snow outside, the same groundhog, the same town. He cheats, he schemes, he tries every shortcut imaginable. Nothing sticks. Phil can die and still wake up on February 2nd.

Harold Ramis turned a one-joke premise into something oddly moving — and the phrase "groundhog day" has since passed into everyday English as shorthand for any maddening loop.
