Synopsis

The Man Who Never Was (1956) is a wartime thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Director Ronald Neame brings to the screen one of the boldest deceptions British intelligence ever pulled off. In the spring of 1943 the Allies are preparing to land on Sicily, and they need the German command convinced the blow will fall on Greece instead.

The scheme sounds insane. Take the body of a man who died of natural causes, dress him as a Royal Marines officer, chain a briefcase of forged staff papers about a Balkan offensive to his wrist, and slip him into the sea off the Spanish coast — trusting the current to carry the "courier" somewhere German agents will recover him. After that it all rides on detail: the dead man is given a name, a fiancée, letters, debts, habits, an entire life he never lived. One wrong touch and the enemy smells the trap.

Neame keeps it restrained, no gunfire or car chases, drawing its tension from paperwork and the long wait to learn whether the Germans swallowed the bait. Clifton Webb and Gloria Grahame head the cast. A fine pick for fans of old-school spy drama and true intelligence stories. Stream The Man Who Never Was (1956) online on iFILM.
