Burglar

Burglar (1987) is a crime comedy with Whoopi Goldberg, ready to watch online on iFILM. By day, Bernie Rhodenbarr runs a little San Francisco bookshop. By night she lets herself into other people's apartments — quiet, quick and almost honest about it.

Bernie wants out of the game but takes one last job, and naturally that's the night it all falls apart: the place she just robbed turns up with a corpse in it, and she's the only person who can be put at the scene. To dodge charges for both the break-in and the murder, she drags her motor-mouthed friend Carl, a dog groomer played by Bobcat Goldthwait, into an investigation of their own. Along the way there's a sour cop in Lesley Ann Warren and a very young John Goodman in a small role.

Director Hugh Wilson, the man behind Police Academy, turned Lawrence Block's Bernie Rhodenbarr mysteries into a breezy whodunit chase. The tagline promised a first-rate comedy about a second-story woman, and the whole thing rides on Goldberg's cheeky charm. It's for anyone who misses the easygoing comedies of the 1980s.
