Synopsis
Army of Shadows (L'Armée des ombres, 1969) is Jean-Pierre Melville's war drama, available to watch online on iFILM. In occupied France, Resistance organizer Philippe Gerbier is handed over by an informer and dumped behind the wire of a German camp. His escape is only where the story begins.
What comes next has no heroics in it: safe houses, passwords, operations that fall apart, and the cold reckoning owed to a traitor. Melville films the underground not as adventure but as quiet, grinding labor, where everyone understands that one slip means torture and a bullet. Around Gerbier stand a few others cut from the same cloth — the unflappable Luc Jardie and the daring courier Mathilde, who has far more to lose than the men. Trust is almost impossible, and sometimes the death sentence has to be passed on your own.
Lino Ventura and Simone Signoret play it without a trace of grandstanding, and Melville himself had served in the Resistance — which explains the dry, hard-won precision of every scene. Booed at home as Gaullist propaganda on release, the film was reassessed decades later and now ranks among its director's finest. Slow, icy and merciless, it's for viewers ready for a heavy meditation on what resistance costs. Stream Army of Shadows (1969) online on iFILM.
