About

Synopsis

Le Cercle Rouge (1970) is Jean-Pierre Melville's crime thriller, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Spare dialogue, gray Parisian light, three men pulled into one impossible jewel heist.

Fresh out of prison, Corey (Alain Delon) gets a tip about a jeweler on the Place Vendome. Driving up from Marseille, he ends up hiding escaped fugitive Vogel in his trunk, the very man Commissioner Mattei (Bourvil) is hunting. The two recruit Jansen, a washed-up ex-cop and crack marksman played by Yves Montand, and the trio rehearses a robbery timed to the second while Mattei quietly tightens the net.

Melville built his ultimate statement on loyalty, fate and the loner's code here. The central break-in runs nearly half an hour with almost no words, a sustained piece of tension few heist films have matched since. Cold tones, Eric Demarsan's score, doom instead of moralizing. For anyone who loves neo-noir and slow-burning dread, this 1970 classic delivers. Stream Le Cercle Rouge online on iFILM.
