Synopsis
One Life (2023) is a historical drama from director James Hawes, led by Anthony Hopkins and available to watch online on iFILM. It follows what a London stockbroker named Nicholas Winton quietly pulled off in Prague on the eve of the war: getting hundreds of Jewish children out of Czechoslovakia and onto trains to safety before the borders slammed shut.
The story runs on two timelines. In the late 1930s, a young Winton (Johnny Flynn) fights paperwork, scrambles for foster homes and railway seats, and races a clock he knows is almost out. Half a century later, an elderly Nicky (Hopkins) opens an old briefcase, finds a scrapbook full of names, and still cannot forgive himself for the kids he never managed to reach. It all builds to a TV studio moment where he ends up surrounded by those grown children.
Helena Bonham Carter plays his mother, whose sheer stubbornness held the whole effort together. The film resists swelling heroics; instead it sits in the quiet guilt of a man convinced he should have done more. For anyone drawn to restrained, fact-based dramas that treat courage as ordinary, it lands hard. Stream One Life (2023) online on iFILM.
