Synopsis
The Great Silence (Il grande silenzio, 1968) is Sergio Corbucci's snowbound spaghetti western, available to watch online on iFILM. The winter of 1898 buries the mountain town of Snow Hill near the Mexican border, where starving outlaws hide in the hills and licensed killers hunt them for cash.
A mute gunfighter known only as Silence — played by Jean-Louis Trintignant — stands between the fugitives and the men with bounty warrants. His throat was cut as a boy by the same kind of hunter he now opposes. His enemy is Loco, a smiling sadist brought to life by Klaus Kinski, who murders strictly within the law. When a freshly widowed woman hires Silence for revenge, the killing turns personal.
Corbucci swapped the usual desert for the frozen Dolomites, and Ennio Morricone scored it with one of his bleakest, most mournful themes. The ending is so merciless it still gets argued over as the darkest western ever made. For anyone who assumed the genre had no surprises left. Stream The Great Silence (1968) online on iFILM.
