About

Synopsis

Ironclad (2011) is a bloody medieval war film from director Jonathan English, and you can watch it online on iFILM. England, 1215: the barons have forced King John to seal a charter limiting his power, but he breaks his word within weeks and marches a hired army across the country to crush them.

Standing in his path is Rochester Castle. A handful of men under Baron Albany (Brian Cox) bolt themselves behind its walls, among them a tight-lipped Templar named Marshall, played by James Purefoy, sworn to nonviolence and forced to abandon the vow. Against them rages a half-mad John (Paul Giamatti), determined to level the place stone by stone. The siege grinds on through starvation, tunnels dug under the foundations, and brutal fighting on the ramparts. Trapped inside too is Lady Isabel (Kate Mara), and the pull between her and Marshall cuts against every oath he's taken.

Charles Dance and Derek Jacobi turn up in smaller roles, lending the whole thing extra heft. It's shot deliberately filthy and savage — severed limbs, boiling pitch, zero romance about how medieval war actually worked. Built for viewers who want grim siege cinema in the Vikings vein, not a glossy costume fairy tale. Stream Ironclad (2011) online on iFILM.
