About

Synopsis

The Hole in the Ground (2019) is Lee Cronin's Irish horror film, and you can watch online on iFILM. Sarah moves to a house at the edge of a forest with her young son Chris, hoping to leave a broken past behind. Deep in the trees gapes an enormous sinkhole — and after one strange night, the boy starts behaving as if he isn't quite her son anymore.

Seána Kerslake anchors nearly every frame. Her Sarah is caught between a mother's love and the creeping dread that the child in her house is an impostor. Ordinary things curdle into menace — a meal, a reflection, a smile held a beat too long. A grieving neighbour who lost her own son, played by Kati Outinen, plants a thought Sarah can't shake. Cronin builds fear from atmosphere and doubt rather than cheap jolts.

This was Cronin's feature debut, the film that earned him the director's chair on Evil Dead Rise. It reaches back to old changeling folklore and reroutes it through very modern fears about motherhood and identity. Slow-burn, mood-soaked horror for viewers who'd rather feel a chill down the spine than see gore on screen. Stream The Hole in the Ground (2019) online on iFILM.
