Synopsis

The Pumpkin Eater (1964) — watch online on iFILM, a British psychological drama directed by Jack Clayton from Harold Pinter's screenplay, adapted from Penelope Mortimer's 1962 novel. Anne Bancroft plays Jo, a mother of seven children on her third marriage — this time to Jake, a successful screenwriter played by Peter Finch. Bancroft took the Best Actress prize at Cannes for this performance.

Jake is good company and serially unfaithful. Jo absorbs it until she can't. The marriage has genuine connection — that's what makes the damage matter. James Mason appears in one scene; it's brief, and it cracks everything open. Maggie Smith has a sharp supporting role.

Pinter's script doesn't explain — it compresses. Every exchange carries more than it says, and Bancroft plays the silences as precisely as the words. A film about a marriage that two people can neither sustain nor abandon. Stream "The Pumpkin Eater" (1964) online on iFILM.
