Synopsis

Professor Henry Higgins, a phonetics expert with too much confidence and not enough manners of his own, bets Colonel Pickering he can pass a Cockney flower seller off as a duchess. Eliza Doolittle has other ideas. She endures Higgins' relentless drills — vowel charts, marbles in her mouth, hours of repetition — and the transformation that follows is funny, painful and quietly unsettling in equal measure.
The film took home eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Cinematography. What makes it last is not the spectacle but the tension underneath: the question of who actually owns the achievement when one person does all the work and another takes all the credit.
