Synopsis
Tangerine (2015) is Sean Baker's comedy-drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Shot entirely on three iPhone 5s handsets, it gives Los Angeles a grainy, sun-bleached, completely alive look you won't get from a studio camera.
It's Christmas Eve. Sin-Dee, a transgender sex worker, gets out after 28 days locked up and hears her pimp boyfriend cheated while she was gone. What follows is a breakneck sprint through Hollywood's boulevards, doughnut shops and car washes: Sin-Dee hunts down the other woman, her friend Alexandra just wants to sing at a bar, and an Armenian cab driver named Razmik carries a secret of his own. Everyone collides in one diner.
Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor play it like the camera isn't there, and Taylor picked up a string of critics' awards for her turn. Baker would later make The Florida Project and Anora, but he found his voice right here: real tenderness for people at the bottom, zero pity. Loud, funny, and warmer than you'd expect.
