Synopsis
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) is the Australian comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Stephan Elliott. Two drag performers and a transgender woman pile into a battered tour bus they nickname Priscilla and drive across the red outback to Alice Springs for a cabaret gig.
Underneath the sequins and ABBA lip-syncs sits something quieter. Tick (Hugo Weaving) is heading toward a reunion with the young son he barely knows. Brash Adam (Guy Pearce) seems determined to pick a fight with an entire continent. And Bernadette (Terence Stamp, playing it with real restraint and zero camp) has just buried her partner and has no idea what comes next. The road hands them hostile pub towns and unexpected kindness in equal measure.
The costumes by Lizzy Gardiner and Tim Chappel are practically a fourth character — they're what landed the film its Oscar, and Gardiner showed up to the ceremony in a dress stitched from credit cards. The movie became a cult favorite well beyond Australia and remains one of the warmest road films ever made about being who you are. It's for anyone who wants a comedy with a genuine heart under the feathers. Stream The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) online on iFILM.
