Synopsis
Marshall (2017) is a courtroom drama you can watch online on iFILM, with Chadwick Boseman as a young Thurgood Marshall — years before he'd sit on the Supreme Court. Here he's a traveling lawyer for the NAACP, riding from town to town to take the cases nobody else will touch.
The setting is Connecticut, late 1930s. A Black chauffeur stands accused of assault by his wealthy white employer, and Marshall is sent to defend him — only to have the presiding judge bar him from speaking in court. So he has to argue through Sam Friedman (Josh Gad), a Jewish insurance attorney who wants no part of this fight. Two outsiders are forced to build a defense while the press and the jury have already made up their minds. Kate Hudson, Sterling K. Brown and Dan Stevens fill out the cast.
Director Reginald Hudlin narrows a towering life down to a single trial, and the film is sharper for it. No cradle-to-grave biopic — just a tense courtroom where the truth starts out outnumbered. It's also one of the last roles that showed what kind of dramatic actor Boseman was outside the superhero suit. Stream Marshall (2017) online on iFILM.
