Synopsis
Philadelphia (1993) is a courtroom drama directed by Jonathan Demme — watch it online on iFILM. Tom Hanks plays Andrew Beckett, a top-tier lawyer at a prestigious firm who gets fired the moment his colleagues discover he has AIDS. With no one willing to touch the case, he turns to Joe Miller, a personal-injury attorney who's never handled anything remotely like this.
Denzel Washington plays Miller — a man with his own prejudices, who gradually finds himself arguing the most important case of his career. Across the courtroom stands the firm's senior partner Charles Wheeler, played by Jason Robards. Antonio Banderas brings weight to the role of Beckett's partner Miguel, anchoring the human story behind the legal fight. At 126 minutes the film never loses its grip.
Screenwriter Ron Nyswaner put the AIDS crisis and discrimination against LGBTQ people front and center at a time when Hollywood mostly looked away. Hanks took the Academy Award for Best Actor. Bruce Springsteen wrote "Streets of Philadelphia" for the film — it won the Oscar for Best Original Song too. Stream Philadelphia (1993) in high quality on iFILM.
