Synopsis
I Stand Alone (Seul contre tous, 1999) is Gaspar Noé's debut feature, a drama-thriller you can watch online on iFILM. A nameless Paris butcher walks out of prison and tries to rebuild a life. It only gets worse.
There's no work, the mistress lied about the shop she promised, and he has put his daughter in an institution. What fills the film is the man's inner voice — a bitter, racist, hate-soaked monologue that Noé fires straight at the viewer in voiceover. Philippe Nahon plays him so completely that you can't look away and can barely keep watching. This is a film about loneliness and grievance curdling into the readiness to hurt someone, and the director hands you no easy way to sympathize.
Minutes before the climax, an on-screen timer warns you to leave — the same provocation Noé would later expand in Irréversible. The picture screened in Critics' Week at Cannes and put his name on the map overnight. Fair warning: it's brutal, not a casual night in, and plainly not for everyone. If you're up for radical auteur cinema, this is where Noé begins. Stream I Stand Alone (1999) online on iFILM.
