About

Synopsis

Terms of Endearment (1983) is a comedy-laced drama you can watch online on iFILM. James L. Brooks adapted Larry McMurtry's novel into a story that spans thirty years and refuses to sit still in one mood — it laughs, then it wrecks you.

At its center are Aurora Greenway and her daughter Emma, two women who love each other and drive each other up the wall. Aurora (Shirley MacLaine) is prickly, controlling, and dead set against Emma's marriage to a broke, philandering professor (Jeff Daniels). Emma (Debra Winger) marries him anyway, has kids, moves away, and keeps the long-distance phone fights going for years. Meanwhile a washed-up ex-astronaut next door, Garrett Breedlove, played by Jack Nicholson at his roguish best, cracks Aurora's armor open. Danny DeVito and John Lithgow round out the orbit around them.

The film swept five Oscars, including Best Picture and acting wins for MacLaine and Nicholson. What makes it last is Brooks' timing: he'll have you grinning one minute and gutted the next, and he never lets the sentiment turn syrupy. Great for anyone who loves big performances and family stories that earn their tears honestly. Stream Terms of Endearment (1983) online on iFILM.
