Synopsis
House on Haunted Hill (1959) is William Castle's classic horror starring Vincent Price, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Eccentric millionaire Frederick Loren rents a mansion with a grim reputation for one night and invites five strangers to a very odd party.
The terms are simple and sinister. Anyone who lasts until morning under the same roof as Loren and his wife Annabelle walks away with ten thousand dollars. The guests arrive in hearses, each is handed a loaded pistol, and the doors lock until dawn. From there come screams in the dark, a body swinging on a rope, and a vat of acid down in the cellar. The catch: not every ghost here is supernatural — the living have their own schemes. Price runs the whole thing on that trademark icy grin.
Castle was famous for carnival showmanship; in theaters a glowing skeleton flew over the audience on a wire, a gimmick he called Emergo. Black-and-white, hokey and charming, the film became a genre landmark and later spawned a 1999 remake. Ideal for fans of old-school scares with no gore and no CGI.
