Synopsis
Saludos Amigos (1942) is a short Disney anthology you can watch online on iFILM. It runs just 42 minutes, yet in that span Donald Duck and Goofy cover half of Latin America, with live-action travel footage stitched between the animated sketches.
The film is built from four segments: Donald butts heads with a stubborn llama high on Lake Titicaca, Goofy tries on the life of an Argentine gaucho, and a plucky little mail plane named Pedro battles the Andes. The finale introduces the Brazilian parrot José Carioca, who shows Donald around Rio and a whirl of samba. In between the cartoons, Disney drops in real reels from the studio's own trip across the continent.
This was the first of Disney's South American features, drawn from an actual goodwill tour the animators took during the war to strengthen ties between the United States and its neighbors.
