Synopsis
Don't Look Now (1973) is Nicolas Roeg's haunted psychological thriller, and you can watch it online on iFILM. After their young daughter drowns, John and Laura Baxter retreat to a wintry, half-empty Venice where he restores a crumbling church and the city slowly closes in around their grief.
In a restaurant Laura meets two elderly sisters, one of them blind, who claims to see the dead girl sitting beside the couple. John, all logic and skepticism, refuses to listen, even as a small figure in a red coat keeps darting through the canals at the edge of his vision. Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie play a marriage running on shared pain and little else; their intimate scene together sparked years of argument over how it was filmed.
Roeg came up as a cinematographer, and it shows: he fractures the timeline so memory, present and premonition bleed into one another, a technique filmmakers have been borrowing ever since. Adapted from a Daphne du Maurier story, it builds to an ending that rewrites everything before it and lingers for days. If you like dread that creeps rather than jumps, start here.
