At Crunchem Hall she runs into Miss Trunchbull, a former hammer-throwing champion who treats children like projectiles to be hurled over a fence. Emma Thompson disappears under prosthetics to play her as a gleeful grotesque. On Matilda's side are the gentle Miss Honey, played by Lashana Lynch, and the girl's own stubborn conviction that unfairness is meant to be broken, not endured. Director Matthew Warchus adapted his own Royal Shakespeare Company stage hit, and the schoolyard-revolt numbers land with real scale.
