Synopsis
Red Angel (赤い天使, 1966) is a Japanese war drama directed by Yasuzo Masumura — watch it online on iFILM. Leading actress Wakao Ayako plays Sakura Nishi, a young army nurse posted to a field hospital in northern China in 1939. Her immediate superior, Dr. Okabe, has performed so many amputations that he does them with the detachment of a factory worker.
Surrounded by men who are dying or already broken, Sakura navigates her duties without guidance or ceremony. She is drawn toward Okabe — not the war's most visible casualty, but perhaps its most hollowed-out one. The 95-minute film follows these two as they try to hold on to something human while the wards fill and the front line moves closer.
Masumura built this film as a deliberate rebuke to Japan's wartime cinema tradition: no glory, no sacrifice rendered beautiful, no redemption through death. The battlefield is clinical and exhausting. Wakao carries Sakura with an unnerving mix of tenderness and pragmatism that keeps the film from settling into mere bleakness.
