Synopsis

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) is Mike Nichols' drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It's late at night on a New England campus. History professor George and his wife Martha come home from a faculty party already drunk, and Martha has invited a younger couple over for a nightcap.

The guests have no idea what they've walked into. George and Martha have been at war for years, and the booze strips away whatever restraint is left. Insults, old wounds and buried secrets come flying out across the living room. The newlyweds, played by George Segal and Sandy Dennis, laugh at first, then try to leave, and by dawn realize their own marriage is starting to crack too. Almost the entire film is four people, a bottle, and one room.

Elizabeth Taylor played the blowsy, foul-mouthed Martha against her glamorous image and won her second Academy Award; Sandy Dennis took the supporting Oscar. This was Nichols' first feature, adapted from Edward Albee's notorious stage play, and it picked up five Academy Awards in all. Richard Burton plays George raw and cornered.
