Hard to Be a God

Rumata lives among them disguised as a local noble, bound by strict mission rules — no interference, no fighting, no killing, just observation. Then the local authorities start purging anyone who can read, and the distance between watching and acting starts to collapse.

Shot entirely in black and white on a restless handheld camera, the film is less sci-fi than a waking fever — mud, crowd noise, bodies pressing in from every direction. Based on Arkady and Boris Strugatsky's novel, it stands as Alexei German's final statement: three hours on what it costs to stay human in a world that punishes the attempt.
