Synopsis
Hunger (Sult, 1966) is a Scandinavian drama you can watch online on iFILM — a Danish-Norwegian-Swedish co-production directed by Henning Carlsen, adapted from Knut Hamsun's 1890 novel.
Christiania, 1890. The writer Pontus wanders the city in a slow-motion collapse. No money, no editor for his manuscripts. He gives his last coins to strangers — whether from pride or breakdown is not always clear. Between these moments he falls in love, keeps writing, keeps hoping. Per Oscarsson took the Best Actor prize at Cannes in 1966 for this performance; there is no craft on display, just a man coming apart over the course of a day.
Hamsun drew on his own years of destitution in Norway for the novel, and Carlsen matched that austerity onscreen — no score to lean on, no sentiment to cushion the fall. Stream Hunger online on iFILM.
