About

Synopsis

"Boat People" (1982) is a Hong Kong drama to watch online on iFILM — Ann Hui's unflinching account of post-liberation Vietnam, winner of Best Film at the 1983 Hong Kong Film Awards. A Japanese photojournalist lands with press credentials and goodwill, ready to document the new order.

What he documents, guided by a teenage girl from the slums, is harder to photograph. Refugee camps. Families building rafts out of scrap and desperation. People the state has written off entirely. George Lam plays the journalist; a young Andy Lau appears in a supporting role. The film belongs to Hong Kong's New Wave — lean, political, shot on location — and it landed as one of the sharpest films the region produced in the 1980s. Stream "Boat People" (1982) on iFILM.
