Synopsis
Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem (2014) is a tense Israeli courtroom drama you can watch online on iFILM. Under religious law a woman can be divorced only if her husband grants it. Viviane's husband simply refuses.
What follows is five years of hearings, and the camera barely leaves one bare, fluorescent-lit room. Viviane wants a single thing: to be free. Her lawyer hunts for any legal grounds to force the husband's hand, the man stalls and skips sessions, three rabbinical judges drag their feet, and the law hands the final word to the one person determined to give nothing. Ronit Elkabetz plays Viviane with a fury that registers in the tilt of her head; she also co-directed the film with her brother Shlomi.
Israel submitted it for the Academy Awards, and it collected honors across the festival circuit. With almost no music and nothing but talk and stares, it grips like a thriller. A clear-eyed look at the price of having no rights, told without a single raised voice. Stream Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem (2014) online on iFILM.
