Synopsis
The Island (Ostrov, 2006) is Pavel Lungin's quiet, devastating drama, free to watch online on iFILM. During the war a young Soviet stoker saves his own skin by shooting his comrade at gunpoint — and spends the rest of his life paying for it.
Decades on he is Father Anatoly, a holy fool who shovels coal at a remote monastery on the White Sea. He sleeps in the boiler room, mocks his fellow monks, and openly needles the abbot. Yet pilgrims cross the water to reach him, convinced he can heal the sick, cast out demons and read what's coming. Pyotr Mamonov, a rock musician turned recluse, plays him as neither saint nor madman but a soul gnawed raw by one old sin. Viktor Sukhorukov and Dmitry Dyuzhev round out the brotherhood.
Lungin shot on the actual northern coast near Kem, and the slate sky over black water carries as much weight as any line of dialogue. The film swept Russia's Nika and Golden Eagle awards and remains a touchstone of cinema about guilt and repentance. Slow, hushed, free of sermons — meet it on its own patient terms.
