The Name of the Rose

It is deep winter in northern Italy, at a Benedictine abbey perched on a cliff. The Franciscan friar William of Baskerville arrives with his novice Adso for a theological debate, only to find monks dying one after another. The brothers whisper that the Devil walks among them. William trusts observation and reason instead. His inquiry leads to a sealed, maze-like library and a manuscript someone is willing to kill to keep hidden. Close behind comes the inquisitor Bernardo Gui (F. Murray Abraham), a man who always finds a culprit.

The film adapts Umberto Eco's first novel, a book the author himself disliked seeing on screen. Annaud shot in genuine Romanesque buildings and cast monks for their strange, weathered faces, which gives the abbey its heavy, lived-in feel.
