Heroin(e)
100 Americans Die Every Day From Overdose. Three Women Break to Fight the Cycle One Life at a Time.
Synopsis
Heroin(e) (2017) is Elaine McMillion Sheldon's documentary short, free to watch online on iFILM. In 39 minutes it drops into Huntington, West Virginia, a town where overdose calls became routine.
Three women carry the film, each pulling neighbors back from opioids her own way: a fire chief who answers overdose calls with naloxone, a drug-court judge, and a street missionary handing out bags of food. Sheldon shoots up close, skipping voiceover lectures and on-screen statistics. The short was up for Best Documentary Short at the Academy Awards and went out on Netflix. It's quiet, human work about what the crisis looks like from inches away rather than from a news desk. Stream Heroin(e) (2017) online on iFILM.
