Synopsis

Drugstore Cowboy (1989) is Gus Van Sant's crime drama you can watch online on iFILM, with Matt Dillon as Bob, the leader of a small crew of addicts in early-1970s Portland.

Bob, his wife Dianne (Kelly Lynch) and a younger couple, Rick and Nadine (Heather Graham), drift from town to town robbing pharmacy shelves and hospital cabinets to feed a habit that never lets up. They treat it like a game of cops and robbers, yet Bob lives by strict superstitions: never put a hat on the bed, never talk about dogs. For him the drugs are less about pleasure than about escaping a world where he owes nobody anything. The trouble is that luck runs out, and he senses it before the others do.

Van Sant films all this without sermons and without glamour, the camera close and the rhythm jagged. Beat writer William S. Burroughs turns up as an aging junkie priest. The movie made Van Sant's name and has held cult status ever since. Stream Drugstore Cowboy (1989) online on iFILM.
