Synopsis
A Wedding (Noces, 2017) is a Belgian drama you can watch online on iFILM. Zahira is eighteen, born in Belgium to a Pakistani family, and for most of her life home has meant warmth, laughter and her older brother Amir.
Then her parents bring up marriage. Not love — duty. The family will pick the husband, the way tradition demands, and Zahira is expected to agree. But she grew up in Brussels, with Western friends and a Western life, and she won't hand over her future to anyone else's plan. The distance between her and the people she loves keeps widening, and Amir is caught right in the middle of it.
Director Stéphan Streker based the story on a real case, and the film works through quiet pressure rather than melodrama. Lina El Arabi plays Zahira with a steady restraint that gives the whole thing its weight. One for viewers who like European social drama that refuses easy answers.
