Synopsis
Vacations in Prostokvashino (1980) is a beloved Soviet animated short you can watch online on iFILM. It's the second chapter of the Prostokvashino trilogy, adapted from Eduard Uspensky's stories and directed by Vladimir Popov at the Soyuzmultfilm studio. Just 18 minutes long.
Young Fyodor escapes the city for the countryside one more time. His mother heads off to a resort to wear out her evening gowns, his father goes along with it, and the boy slips away at the train station to rejoin his friends. Waiting for him are Matroskin, the dry, money-minded cat, and Sharik, the soft-hearted dog. Sharik gets a camera-gun in the mail, the cow has a calf, and the cat-and-dog bickering finds fresh fuel.
This is where the famous song "Kaby ne bylo zimy" comes from, still hummed across generations. The charm isn't the plot but the characters: Matroskin and his talk of "joint labor" long ago became folk heroes.
