Synopsis
Three from Prostokvashino (1978) is a Soviet animated short you can watch online on iFILM. A little boy nicknamed Uncle Fyodor loves animals more than anything in the world. His parents, though, want nothing furry or four-legged anywhere near their apartment.
So Fyodor packs a suitcase and walks out — taking along a wisecracking talking cat named Matroskin and a good-natured dog called Sharik. The three settle into an empty cottage in the village of Prostokvashino and start a household of their own: a cow, a hunting rifle, a vegetable patch and endless bickering over who's really in charge. Watching their every move is Pechkin, the nosy village postman, desperate to learn who let a kid live out here with no parents.
Directed by Vladimir Popov at Soyuzmultfilm and adapted from Eduard Uspensky's book, the cartoon runs barely nineteen minutes yet packs in warmth, deadpan jokes and lines several generations of Russians still quote from memory. Oleg Tabakov gives the cat his unmistakable voice. An easy, charming pick for a family evening with kids. Stream Three from Prostokvashino (1978) online on iFILM.
