Synopsis
Winter in Prostokvashino (1984) is a beloved Soviet animated short you can watch online on iFILM. It is the third tale of young Fyodor, the grumbling cat Matroskin and the cheerful dog Sharik, and this time deep snow buries their village just before New Year.
The whole feud starts over nothing. Sharik blew his winter money on sneakers instead of felt boots, Matroskin called him a fool, and now the two won't speak. While cat and dog squabble over who owns what back in the village, in the city Fyodor and his dad are busy patching up the family's little car, and his mother has simply had enough of all of it. Come the holiday, father and son drive out to check on the warring pair — and everyone ends up ringing in the New Year together, mum gliding in on skis.
Director Vladimir Popov and the Soyuzmultfilm studio capped the trilogy with lines that slipped straight into everyday Russian speech, voiced by Oleg Tabakov as the sardonic Matroskin and Lev Durov as the soft-hearted Sharik. Fifteen minutes of cozy winter comfort that generations grew up on and still queue up every New Year's Eve. Stream Winter in Prostokvashino (1984) online on iFILM.
