Carag, a teenage shapeshifter who can take the form of a puma, returns to Clearwater High for a school year that starts under pressure. His mentor and the school's benefactor, Andrew Milling, is facing charges before the Woodwalker Council for allegedly attacking humans. Milling knows that Carag's testimony could tip the verdict — and offers him a deal in return: lie to the Council, and he'll arrange a meeting with Carag's real puma family. Carag agrees. The consequences reach further than he anticipated: his friendships are at risk, and so is the precarious coexistence between humans and shapeshifters that everyone around him takes for granted.
