Synopsis
White Wedding (Noce blanche, 1989) is a French drama by Jean-Claude Brisseau you can watch online on iFILM. The film launched a teenage Vanessa Paradis, who took home the César for most promising actress.
François, an aging philosophy teacher at a provincial lycée, notices an odd girl in his class. Mathilde lives on her own, skips lessons, talks back — yet in his room she lights up with a mind sharper than any straight-A student's. He sets out to rescue the troubled teenager and steer her toward a normal life. What ignites instead is an affair he cannot control. Bruno Cremer plays a man certain he's in charge, right up to the moment the ground gives way beneath him.
Brisseau isn't after a tabloid melodrama; this is a cold study of obsession and of how an adult hides behind a "respectable life" once things turn genuinely frightening. At seventeen, Paradis is no pop star here but the raw nerve of the whole film. For anyone who values hard-edged French auteur cinema with nothing smoothed over.
