Underneath the rural calm, trouble is building: Jean is hiding from the police, and the widow's jealousy runs deeper than anyone expects.

Adapted from a Georges Simenon novel, the film rests entirely on its two leads. Simone Signoret plays loneliness without a single self-pitying note, while Alain Delon brings the charm of a man you should not trust.
